The practice of the Five Animals in Qi Gong was born as a form of medicine in motion. Hua Tuo observed how animals, moving in a natural and harmonious way, maintained their health and vitality. From this insight came a sequence of exercises that help reactivate the flow of Qi, tone the internal organs and cultivate a state of deep balance between body and mind.

The Five Animals and the Five Elements in Qi Gong

Each animal is associated with an organ, an element and an energetic quality. Through the movements of the five Qi Gong animals, we work on the whole energy system and develop the inner virtues connected with the Five Elements (Wu Xing).

🐅 The Tiger – Strength and Courage (Wood Element / Liver)

The Tiger’s movement is powerful and rooted. It trains determination and willpower, stimulates the Liver and helps energy flow throughout the body. With the Tiger we learn to release tension, assert ourselves clearly and express our life force.

🦌 The Deer – Grace and Openness (Fire Element / Heart)

The Deer embodies the lightness and fluidity of the heart. Its sinuous movements open the chest, improve circulation and awaken inner joy. Practising the Deer helps dissolve emotional rigidity and rediscover the capacity for connection and love.

🐻 The Bear – Rootedness and Stability (Earth Element / Spleen)

The Bear represents quiet strength and centredness. Its movements are broad, slow and deep: they massage the abdominal organs, strengthen digestion and develop a sense of security and inner calm. With the Bear we learn to stay present and grounded in the body.

🐒 The Monkey – Agility and Intelligence (Metal Element / Lungs)

The Monkey is lively and curious. Its quick, playful movements encourage mental agility and stimulate the breath and lightness of spirit. It helps us let go of worries and cultivate a clear, alert and flexible mind.

🕊️ The Crane – Harmony and Long Life (Water Element / Kidneys)

Elegant and silent, the Crane symbolises purity and longevity. Its slow, broad movements strengthen the Kidneys and improve balance and concentration. Practising the Crane brings a sense of peace, stability and openness towards the sky.

Benefits of the practice

Five Animals Qi Gong works on several levels:

  • it improves posture and coordination;
  • it strengthens muscles and joints;
  • it supports the function of the internal organs;
  • it promotes deep relaxation and mental focus;
  • it harmonises the energy system according to the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

With regular practice, the body becomes more fluid, the mind calmer, and vital energy flows naturally.

Beginner’s mind

On the path of Chu Xin – beginner’s mind, the Five Animals are not just physical exercises but gateways to awareness. Each animal invites us to get in touch with a part of ourselves: the strength of the Tiger, the lightness of the Crane, the calm of the Bear… Through movement and breath, we learn to reconnect with our original nature, with the simple, spontaneous vitality we all possess.

Practising Five Animals Qi Gong means finding harmony between earth and sky, strength and lightness, energy and stillness. It is an invitation to rediscover the body as a living temple and to nourish our vital energy with presence, curiosity and gratitude.
